Strangeness in the Night

I had a super weird dream last night.  As I was telling Seth about it this morning, I realized how interesting it was.. so I’m going to write it out, and then explain what I feel the meanings were behind it.

I was in a school classroom with people I didn’t know.  Suddenly a group of people in uniform took over the school, placing one of their people in each room.  They had guns and told us to sit down around the walls of the classroom, facing the chalk board.  The girl in charge of us told us that we were going to play a little game.  We were going to each take turns writing a word on the chalk board.  If you wrote the correct word, nothing would happen, and you could sit back down.  If you wrote the wrong word, you would die…a little elf-like creature would come and take you away to kill you.

The girl picked someone to start.. and they chose the right word.  The next person also chose the right word.  A girl next to me was really scared.  I told her that it didn’t matter whether we lived or died, as long as we believed in Jesus.  She asked me how I was so sure.  I told her that I had put my trust in Him, and had seen Him face to face.  My mom was the next to go.. and she, too, chose the right word.  Then it was my turn.

I stood up at the chalk board holding the chalk and turned to the girl in charge.  She told me that I needed to play, and that I had a 50/50 chance of living or dying…I could choose what to write, and it was up to chance on if I got it right.  I decided that I was not going to play and I started to run.  She told me that I would not be able to escape, and because I chose not to play, that I would certainly die, that the creature would find me.  I said that I would hide, and it couldn’t get me because I could fly.  So I ran through the school, hearing the thing getting larger and more ferocious, chasing me.. but I found a hiding spot.  I was not scared, though I desperately did not want this thing to find me.

Then I woke up.

Ok, so here is what I think about all of this.

The school is the world.  The classroom is my corner of the world, and the people in my class are the people who live around me.. most of them I do not know.  The act of being lined up along the wall is significant of the culture we, as Americans, live in.  Our daily lives are filled with ‘order’.  We are made to wake up, go to work or school, do as we are told, and buy in to what others say is good for us, whether it is or not.  We are naturally resistant, but eventually line up to conform to our society.

The group that takes over the school represent the evil spoken of in Ephesians 6:12 ‘For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.’  The individual girl in our class is comparable to a community leader.  Her job is to sway our decisions in what we believe is good.  By telling us we need to write a ‘word’, she is in effect telling us to choose a side.  If you choose her side, you live, or remain part of this class (or society) as you were.  The elf-like creature represents Satan and death.

Now, I want to apply my dream by changing the figurative language and imagry into real terms.

In your life you will undoubtedly be pushed against a wall and told to make a choice.  This may be a mundane decision such as which laundry detergent to buy, or it may be a decision that changes your job or moves you to a new place.  In the world we live in (here in the states) we are inundated daily with products, sex, and immorality.. and it is made to look appealing and good.  It is up to you to decide on whether you will conform to what society thinks is right, or take a stand and be the minority, refusing to let it scare you into being accepted.

The most important decision you will make is whether to live or die.  You actually can make that choice.  I chose to give my life to Christ, and in turn, He chose me to live.  I choose to not live caught up in what the world thinks is right for me.  I choose to tell others about Christ so that they, too, may live.  I choose to run from the powers and principalities, and to not give in to their persuasion on how great this world is.  I hide in Christ, and in Him, have no fear of what may come.

What will you choose when you hear Him knocking on your heart’s door?  Is this world more important than what awaits you at the end of this life?  You may choose to stand against the wall, just biding your time, until it is your turn to pass from this life to the next.. but please be aware that making no decision is one in itself.

After all.. you do have a 50/50 chance of being right….. right?

Proverbs 14

12 There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death.
